Douglas Degges & Chelsea Werner-Jatzke

A collaboration between painter Douglas Degges and writer Chelsea Werner-Jatzke inspired by their separate lives in New York City. This is a collection of two maps of the New York City Subway system—one visual, one textual, both inspired by specific abstraction. Degges' collection of low relief carvings investigate how abstraction can render specific and autobiographical content anonymous, including five paintings created from Werner-Jatzke's photos and in conjunction with her writing which shifts between the personal and general, bringing details into view to challenge the memory, and the identity constructed, of them.

Chapbook Release Party: Adventures in Property Management

Party! Adventures in Property Management was published January 2017 by Sibling Rivalry Press. This collection of flash fictions, loosely based around Werner-Jatzke’s experience as a property manager of the Malden Apartments on Capitol Hill, is woven together by the lives in a Seattle apartment building and the work required in order to maintain them.

Author Matt Bell describes Adventures in Property Management as “unpacking the confusion and loneliness of living in spaces dense with other humans—as well as the hope we must sometimes share, for connection and communion with those unimaginable lives surrounding our own.”

Featuring the talents of fiction writer John Englehardt, poet Lauren Ireland, and multimedia artist and writer Leena Joshi, the evening will wrap with time to drink and chat as Isabel Von Der Ahe DJs in the atrium!

The Untuning of the Sky

Hosted by Henry Art Gallery, The Untuning of the Sky is a series of outdoor events throughout the summer that brings together music, poetry, and film inspired by the mystery and wonder of the sky at night. Held at venues across Seattle, the series links such divergent cultural traditions as the Music of the Spheres and afrofuturism with contemporary astronomical theory. The series takes its name from John Hollander’s 1961 book by the same name that examines the influence of music on poetry.

In this first event, Jim Demetre hosts an evening of poetry at The Center for Wooden Boats. Joined by Natasha Marin and Chelsea Werner-Jatzke, the three will read a selection of poems on the stars and darkened evening skies from the sixteenth century to the present.

Open to writers of all genre and stages of their career, Till increases access to the literary world through writing practices, feedback forums, workspaces, literary readings, and publication opportunities. By decreasing barriers to the pursuit of a writing practice, Till cultivates a space for diverse voices and an opening where writers can create, inspire, and grow their craft.
